Course Information
Description This laboratory-based course accompanies BIOL 1306 Biology for Science Majors I. Laboratory activities will reinforce the fundamental principles of living organisms, including physical and chemical properties of life, organization, function, evolutionary adaptation, and classification. Study and examination of the concepts of cytology, reproduction, genetics, and scientific reasoning are included.
Prerequisites Prerequisite(s): TSI complete in reading
Learning Outcomes 1. Students will demonstrate a knowledge of lab safety and the ability to convert values and measurements between US measurements and the metric system.

2. Students will demonstrate understandings of pH, the actions of buffers to maintain pH, and the relative pH of a variety of common substances.

3. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the mechanisms involved in osmosis and be able to predict the movement of water across a membrane in a variety of situations.

4. Students will demonstrate the ability to utilize a compound microscope, estimate the actual size of a structure viewed using a microscope, and understand the terminology relating to microscopes.

5. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the various phases of the cell cycle, be able to identify the various stages of mitosis.

6. Students will demonstrate understandings of the terminology involved in genetics, the rules and processes involved in conducting Parent, F1, hybrid, dihybrid, and test crosses, as well as being able to predict the outcome of such crosses.
Core Objectives * Communication skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, oral and visual communication.

* Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions.

* Empirical and Quantitative Skills: Students will demonstrate applications of scientific and mathematical concepts.

* Teamwork: Students will demonstrate the ability to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal and consider different points of view.
